Pitahaya, also known as the “dragon fruit,” is an exotic fruit that has gained popularity in recent years due to its unique flavor, vibrant appearance, and numerous health benefits. Originally from Central and South America, this fruit has become an important crop in several regions of Peru, where its adaptability to different climates and soils is taken advantage of.

​Expansion to the Coast and Export Boom

Starting in 2010, pitahaya cultivation experienced a turning point with its expansion to coastal regions. The adaptability of this fruit to different climates and soils, added to the growing international demand, promoted its cultivation in areas such as Piura, Lambayeque, Ica and Lima.

The Peruvian coast, with its warm climate and fertile soils, turned out to be a favorable environment for dragon fruit, allowing for high quality and yield crops. Furthermore, the proximity to ports facilitated access to international markets, boosting exports.

In the first half of 2024, exports reached a notable milestone, with shipments totaling USD 1.3 million and a volume of 406 tons. This achievement represents a notable increase of 566% in value and 339% in volume compared to the same period of the previous year.

​

Currently, the main destinations are the Netherlands, Spain and France and Canada, together concentrating 97% of the shipments. In these markets, Peruvian fruit is taking center stage among these countries due to its quality and delicious flavor, unlike the fruits produced in the Asian market.
